Though Elinor happily plays with Merida, she grows perturbed when Fergus gives the little girl her own bow and set of arrows.Īs Merida tries to hit a target, one of the arrows sails off into the forest nearby.
In a prologue, we see Lord Fergus (voiced by Billy Connolly) and Lady Elinor (voiced by Emma Thompson) in a forested area, celebrating the birthday of their young daughter, Merida. Okay, so I see the obvious similarities, but this movie still has some originally in there somewhere, right? Well, let sum up the story for you.
But then the movie has the addition of having someone turned into a bear (which this movie ripped-off from Brother Bear, a movie that didn't really leave that much of an impact on Disney). She's adventurous, free-spirited (like Ariel and Belle) she doesn't want to be a princess (like Jasmine), she's into fighting and is a tomboy (like Mulan), she's forced into marriage (like Pocahontas), she's a red-head (like Ariel), and she has brothers (okay, that's original). So we venture to a place Disney hasn't touched upon, the land of Scotland, and see the first PIXAR princess, who I will admit is not that original. Despite the problems it had that almost everyone had with this one I wasn't the only one that wished Wreck-It Ralph would have won Best Animated Feature, I can see it as something new from PIXAR, but not new from Disney.
So with all that said, Brave was sort of divided among PIXAR and Disney fans and upon seeing trailers for it, I was thinking this will be the years' best animated film, but there were a few flaws that kept it from being that way. It's also the first PIXAR film to have shared directors and not one director and a couple of co-directors so it is a nice leap for PIXAR. In addition it is the first PIXAR film to be directed by a woman, Brenda Chapman who worked on The Lion King and The Prince of Egypt. So here we are, the 2012 Best Animated Feature winner Brave, which like the main heroine in this movie (this is the first PIXAR film to finally feature a main female protagonist), is making PIXAR break tradition by having not only a female character as the lead, but also the first PIXAR fairy-tale.
Well, if Wreck It Ralph is Disney doing PIXAR, Brave is PIXAR doing Disney.
